ADVISORY COUNCIL ON TOURISM AT SOFIA CITY MUNICIPALITY

Advisory Council on Tourism was set up under Article 10, Para. 7 of the Law on Tourism and Article 21, Para. 1, item 8 and item 23, and Para. 2 of the Act on Local Government and Local Administration.

Resolution № 685 of the Sofia Municipal Council of the meeting held on 13.11.2008 has stipulated the adoption of the Rules of Organization and Procedure of the Advisory Council on Tourism in the territory of Sofia City Municipality. The Rules provide for the Advisory Council to include 28 members, half of whom are employees of the municipal administration and the remaining half of the members are authorized representatives of the tourism industry associations operating in the territory of Sofia City Municipality. Members of municipal councils are not provided as members of the Advisory Council.

Activities of the Advisory Council on Tourism:

Produces and offers for adoption to Sofia City Municipality Council a Programme for Tourism Development in the territory of Sofia City Municipality, in accordance with the priorities of the National strategy and according to local tourism resources and needs.
Makes suggestions and gives opinions on matters that are essential for the development of tourism in the territory of Sofia City Municipality, including the amount of the tourist fee.
Monitors the timely and prioritized implementation of the Programme for Tourism Development.
Assists Sofia City Municipality in developing strategies, programmes and projects for tourism development.
Discusses and approves the thematic scope and quality of the promotional materials and tourist guides that are assigned for production by Tourist Service Municipal Enterprise.
Submits written activity reports to Sofia City Municipality.

In 2008, the Advisory Council took several important decisions regarding the design, construction and location of the Tourist Information Centre – Sofia; the conduct of periodic and thematic discussions with the participation of the Chief Architect of Sofia on the possibilities and prospects for development of tourist resources, addressed to the citizens and foreign visitors of Sofia, and for the conversion of capital into an attractive tourist destination.

Common opinion has been that the Advisory Council on Tourism is an active public body which appropriately supports the administration and Sofia City Council in making important decisions on tourism. Still a main priority facing the administration of Sofia City Municipality is the construction of Tourist Information Centre in Sofia.
